The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has arrested a 24-year-old man suspected of vandalising a telecommunications mast at Esther Obiakor Estate, Agu-Awka.
The suspect, identified as Nweke Friday Wisdom, was reportedly arrested at about 7:20 a.m. after the Corps received a distress call concerning suspicious activity around an MTN telecommunications installation in the area.
According to the NSCDC, officers who responded to the alert found that the mast installation had already been vandalised. Items allegedly removed from the facility, including DC and armoured cables, were recovered from the suspect.
The Corps said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect may have been involved in the vandalism of telecommunications masts and the theft of valuable equipment.
He is expected to be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.
The NSCDC has also called on residents to remain alert and promptly report suspicious movements around telecommunications facilities and other critical infrastructure.
The Corps warned that vandalism of telecom installations can affect communication services while also causing significant financial losses through equipment replacement and repairs.
