*As Correspondents’ Chapel denounce hacking of governor’s phone
The Caretaker Committee of Enugu Council of NUJ has commended the Governor of Enugu State, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and the Covid-19 team in the state for their efforts in containing the dreaded disease in the state.
The Union also commended all health officers in the state for their commitment and high professionalism in taking appropriate care of the two Coronavirus index cases, who have now recovered and already discharged to reunite with their families.
The commendation was contained in a statement signed by the Caretaker Committee Secretary, Comr Chinedu Adonu.
It read, in part: We thank the state government for her efforts, logistics and palliative measures initiated to cushion the effects of the dangerous pandemic on Enugu residents, especially the needy, and we appeal to spirited individuals and corporate organisations to support government efforts with more funds, materials and food items.
“We advise the general public to totally adhere to all official preventive protocols issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), such as social distancing, regular washing of hands with water and detergent, use of hand sanitizer, use of face mask, as well as desisting from handshake and hugging among others to avoid contracting or spread of the disease.
“We also advice the general public to be vigilant and report suspected cases to security agencies and NCDC on phone via 080097000010.
“We appeal to Ndi Enugu to be patient with the state government’s lockdown order and other measures which may be discomforting; such measures are for public good”.
The statement further urged that despite the full recovery and discharge of the two COVID- 19 cases in the state, which has left Enugu free of the deadly disease, the people should continue to stay at home, while maintaining utmost cleanliness and respiratory hygiene, as well as obeying other precautionary measures put in place by the Enugu State Government.
The union also condemned, in its entirety, the hacking of Governor Ugwuanyi’s MTN phone number by yet-to-be-determined fraudsters.
They called on security agencies to be swift in fishing out the culprits, in collaboration with the service provider, and bring the suspected hoodlums to book.
In a similar development, the Enugu chapter of Correspondents’ Chapel, led by Comr Chukwumerije Ajah, also condemned the hacking of the governor’s phone line, describing it as “reprehensible and very unfortunate”.
Comr Ajah, in a statement, wondered why anyone would carry out such dastardly act on a caring and selfless individual like Governor Ugwuanyi, who “sacrifices a lot in order to bridge the dichotomy between the high and low, the rich and poor. A leader whose simplicity is to a fault”.
“The attack on Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, is totally reprehensible and very unfortunate. It is a sign that enemies of progress and haters of Enugu State are on the prowl, seeking every possible means to distract the performing governor.
“While we condemn such criminal attempt on the popular governor by naïve miscreants, we urge His Excellency to remain focused and be rest assured that the fraudsters would sooner than later meet their waterloo and made to face the law.
“This too, shall end in praise,” the statement read.
