Oborevwori’s Transformational Leadership in Delta State

Oborevwori

With what Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is doing in Delta State he may end up being one of the best governors of his time. He has achieved in less than two years what many of his contemporaries may never attempt in eight. Once accused of being a street boy regardless of his sound educational background, Oborevwori has through diligence and application of street wisdom reduced waste and brought quality to governance in the state.

Infrastructural development has moved a notch higher with gentrification of notable skid rows in the state. Effurum and Warri hitherto marginally attended to have received a good dose of his government’s transformational touch. Legacy projects like cloverleaf (highway interchange), pedestrian bridges, flyovers and road expansion have sprung up in locations that have the greatest need for them.

But it is not all about construction of roads and bridges – (the brick and mortar approach to governance) – that sets Oborevwori’s government apart as impressive. The People’s Democratic Party Governor has done much more. He has brought development model that sets great store by accountability in the award and execution of contracts. He anchors governance on supervision and control and ensures that award and execution of contracts are painstakingly done with contractors working their till to deliver. Breach of any kind like contract abandonment, use of substandard materials, construction errors is not only frowned at, but contractors responsible for that is punished and blacklisted accordingly.

Described as a Governor who smells bad job from afar, Oborevwori does not just detest shabby execution of contracts he works hard to ensure they don’t happen under his watch. He often goes on inspection of projects, armed with micrometer and without prior information to the contractors in the field. To the glory of the state he has been able to discover a lot of manipulations by both contractors and site engineers and successfully corrected structural defects.

Huge sums of money have been saved for the state through this unscheduled site visits. Contractors have continue to marvel at this – particularly his gall in intruding in areas where they make extra money.

The Governor’s hands-on approach to development – his ability to detect construction error when he sees one makes his government unique. He has been as proactive in engaging contractors in the field as he has confounded the opposition political parties. Impressed by his efforts so far, stakeholders in the state among them Chief Edwin Clark have applauded him for giving the state deserving uplift. Oborevwori has continued to apply the PDP’s principles of good leadership and nothing suggests he is in any hurry to change until a great transformation is wrought.
