Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, an Igbo socio-cultural organization, has stated the ongoing political face off between Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. Dave Umahi and some prominent chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was aimed to make the State and South East zone ungovernable.
Umahi had defected to the APC over claims of PDP’s alleged marginalization of the Southeast.
Since his shocking defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the governing APC, Governor Umahi had been in loggerhead with former Senate President, Senator Pius Anyim, ex-Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Sam Egwu and other stakeholders that vehemently opposed the Governor’s action.
However, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council,(OYC), in a statement jointly signed by its President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Secretary General, Okwu Nnabuike, and forwarded to Akelicious on Tuesday, urged political gladiators in Ebonyi state to ceasefire, warned to resist any attempts to make Ebonyi state lawless over Umahi’s defection.
The Igbo socio-cultural group further posited that Governor Umahi’s decision of dumping PDP to the governing party was in the best interest of South East zone, insisting that the former ruling PDP had been unfair to the South East geopolitical zone despite bulk votes it enjoyed from the region during national elections.
According to the statement which partly read, “OYC recalled that the political crisis that led to untimely deaths of hundreds of young people in Ebonyi state, based on the feud between Dr. Sam Egwu and Pius Anyim during the tenure of Sam Egwu as Governor and Senator Anyim as Senate President had remained indelible in our minds. There are attempts to repeat that violence again in 2020 through the ongoing recruitment of cultists and radical biafra agitators by Ebonyi Leaders against Governor Umahi with evil intention to set the state ablaze.
“OYC caution that this madness must stop and violence should be resisted except if the children of those brewing the crisis should lead it. Has Senator Pius Anyim forgotten his alleged involvement in the scandal of Abuja Centenary City, which OYC had been studying of recent?, Has Senator Sam Egwu forgotten so soon the scandal that led to his exit during his tenure as Minister of Education, where millions were squandered at his birthday party in 2009 when ASUU was on strike?. We have all comprehensive lists from the budget office of National Assembly from 1999 to 2019, and the records of monies released for constituency projects for the three senatorial zones in Ebonyi state. We are still investigating on projects executed so far by the National Assembly members from Ebonyi state. They will be called to render their stewardship sooner than later.
“Governor Umahi’s tenure has been peaceful and had recorded alot of developmental strides in Ebonyi state and he should not be distracted. His political sojourn to APC is in the best interests of Southeast Region with the Support and backing of igbos. On that note, OYC issues a stern warning and 7 days ultimatum to the Ebonyi Political leaders to ceasefire and promote peaceful coexistence amongst all political parties.
“OYC reacting to Senator Pius Anyim’s claims that Governor Umahi wants to kill Ebonyi leaders as false statements and a huge joke aimed at creating disaffection and divide Ebonyians along political parties lines. Igbo youths wonders why Anyim is always on the media for negative reasons. Last time, he alleged that Prince Arthur Eze was after him and now its Governor Umahi, who knows next. We wish to admonish the Former President of the Senate, that its time to allow peace triumphs in Ebonyi state and he should never repeat the sad episodes of the feud that existed between him and Senator Sam Egwu”.
