Okada: Imo State Govt Begins Total Enforcement On Restricted Areas

In a bid to ensure that commercial motorcycle operators adhere to the restriction order banning their operations in Owerri municipal Council and other specified areas within the municipality, the Ministry of Transport has authorized the setting up of an enforcement team that will ensure total compliance.

The Ministry of Transport through a letter dated 15th September 2020 signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Lady Ngozi Izunobi, authorized the Executive of Imo Motorcycle Association under the leadership of Comr. Peter Udogu to immediately constitute the enforcement team following the expiration of the 14 days notice earlier given to commercial motorcycle operators to adhere willingly to the restriction order.

The letter captioned “Authority to enforce the ban on Motorcycle Operators Operating within the Restricted Areas of Owerri City and its Environ”, however reads as follows:

“Sequel to the meeting held with Executives of Imo Motorcycle Operators in the State and the management of Ministry of Transport on 31st August 2020, on the above subject matter; the Ministry of Transport has given authority to the Executives of the Union to enforce a total ban after 14 days notice through radio announcement and other media outlets which has elapsed.

All impounded motorcycles should be domiciled within the Ministry of Transport premises at the State Secretariat, Portharcourt Road, Owerri, Imo State”.

Recall that the leadership of Imo Motorcycle Associations had recently and jointly signed a resolution with Barr. Rex Anunobi, the Commissioner for Transport where the former agreed to work towards ensuring that its members adhere with government restriction order on commercial motorcycles in Owerri municipal area.

Also recall that commercial motorcycles are restricted from operating along major roads in the municipality specifically from the following points:

Okigwe Road from Fly Over/Iwuanyanwu Glass House, Egbu Road from Shoprite, Orlu Road from Flyover/Rochas Road, Portharcourt Road from Ebere Links Petrol Station, World Bank from Ideal Suite/World Bank Market, MCC/Uratta Road from Methodist Junction, Aba Road from Emmanuel College Roundabout and Old Nekede Road from WestEnd Roundabout.
