Ondo Funeral Turns Tragic

A traditional funeral ceremony in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, turned tragic after a high chief was fatally shot during rites held in honour of a deceased colleague.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, as traditional rites were being performed in the community.

Eyewitnesses said tension erupted at the ceremony after a yet-to-be-identified person carrying a firearm reportedly discharged the weapon, with the bullet striking the high chief in the head.

The traditional ruler reportedly died instantly from the gunshot wound.

Residents who witnessed the incident described the shooting as an accidental discharge, although the circumstances surrounding the firearm discharge remain subject to investigation.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Jimoh said police detectives had commenced a detailed investigation to establish exactly what led to the fatal shooting and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
