The Oyo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters has trained 873 Local Government Supervisory Councillors and Special Assistants across the state’s 33 local government areas to enhance grassroots governance and service delivery.
The capacity-building workshop, held in Ibadan on Thursday, aimed to equip the participants with practical skills and administrative knowledge.
“The capacity workshop is for 453 Local Government Supervisory Councillors, and 420 Special Assistants across the 33 Local Government Areas.
“This workshop is to equip them with skills and knowledge to improve governance at the grassroots level,” said the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, who was represented by the Coordinating Director of the ministry, Oladotun Olamide.
Ojo emphasized the importance of proactive engagement by the officials, noting that the training serves as a catalyst for improved service delivery.
He also commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his commitment to promoting good governance across the state.
Lead consultant and lecturer from the University of Ibadan’s Department of Agricultural Economics, Kemisola Adenegan, facilitated the session. She urged participants to apply their training effectively in supporting local governance and to actively participate in decision-making within their communities.
Speaking on behalf of the trainees, Hammed Adebisi, Supervisory Councillor for Youth and Sports in Iseyin Local Government, lauded the initiative, saying it would “redefine the approach of local leaders to problem-solving and grassroots development.”
Adebisi also emphasized that strengthening administrative structures at the local level is critical, given its proximity to the people.
