PDP to Hold 100th NEC Meeting in Abuja Amid Tensions with INEC

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to holding its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for June 30, 2025, in Abuja. Addressing journalists on the party’s preparedness, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, raised concerns about the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the commission of unnecessarily interfering in the party’s internal operations.

According to Ologunagba, the PDP had formally written to INEC on May 30, notifying it of the NEC meeting in line with the 21-day notice stipulated by law. However, INEC reportedly took 13 days to respond.

He noted that, under Nigeria’s Electoral Act (Part 2, Section 13), political parties are not legally required to notify INEC of NEC or National Working Committee (NWC) meetings, only on conventions, congresses, and primaries which fall under INEC’s oversight.

He said nonetheless, the PDP issued the notice as a matter of formality, only for INEC to raise unwarranted concerns. Ologunagba further criticized INEC for adding an unsolicited agenda item to the meeting notice, a move the party interprets as undue interference in its internal affairs. Despite these challenges, he said preparations for the upcoming national executive council meeting are progressing.

The PDP reiterated its commitment to operating within the bounds of the constitution and legal framework, despite what it described as interference from INEC. The party also took the opportunity to criticize the ruling party and the current administration, renewing its call for a change in national leadership come 2027.
