Presidential aide has dismissed the credibility of ’s promise to serve only one term if elected president, describing the former Anambra governor as a politician whose political history contradicts his public pledges.
Reacting to Obi’s recent statement that he would willingly leave office after four years “even with a gun to my head” in the interest of national stability, Onanuga argued that the Labour Party chieftain has repeatedly failed to keep major political commitments throughout his career.
According to Onanuga, Obi once swore allegiance to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and reportedly vowed never to abandon the party that brought him to power as governor of Anambra State. He claimed Obi even made the pledge before the late APGA leader and Biafran icon, Dim .
The presidential spokesman, however, noted that Obi later left APGA for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that the move showed his political promises could not be trusted.
“If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything,” Onanuga said. “By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances.”
Peter Obi had earlier stated that he was prepared to serve only one term in office to ensure political stability and national progress, stressing that he would not remain in power beyond four years under any circumstance.
