Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised Nigerian artists for their outstanding performances and representation at the ongoing World Cup, describing their presence on the global stage as evidence of the country’s immense talent potential.
In a statement, Obi argued that Nigeria’s absence from the tournament is not due to a lack of talent but rather a failure of political leadership to create an enabling environment for talent development and national growth.
According to him, two key developments at the World Cup underscore this reality: the strong showing of Nigerian artists during the tournament and the significant number of Nigerians representing other countries on the football field.
Obi said these developments should serve as a wake-up call for political leaders to invest in policies and opportunities that allow young Nigerians to thrive and compete globally.
He also commended music star Davido for using his international platform to draw attention to Nigeria’s security challenges. The former Anambra State governor noted that the singer wore a custom black leather jacket bearing the message “BRING THEM HOME,” alongside the names of schoolchildren and teachers reportedly abducted by bandits in Oyo State.
Obi described the gesture as a powerful act of advocacy that went beyond entertainment, helping to spotlight the plight of victims and the broader insecurity affecting the country.
“The pervasive insecurity in Nigeria deserves international attention, especially given the government’s apparent inability to effectively address the crisis,” Obi stated.
Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism about the nation’s future, maintaining that a revitalized Nigeria remains possible with purposeful leadership and deliberate investment in its people.
