Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has appealed to the Obi of Onitsha and other Igbo leaders to promote unity, accountability and transparency amid recent political disagreements in Anambra State.
Obi made the appeal in a letter dated September 19, 2026, addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty, in which he called for the records surrounding recent public exchanges involving the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and his former administration to be made available for scrutiny.
The former governor said issues concerning financial records and other allegations that have become subjects of public discussion should not be settled through exchanges, accusations or counter-accusations.
According to him, “They deserve facts, documents and transparency,” stressing the need for relevant records to be examined and legitimate questions answered with evidence.
Obi said public office should be regarded as a trust, adding that history would ultimately judge those entrusted with positions of responsibility long after they had left office.
He urged Igbo leaders and stakeholders to ensure that political disagreements between individuals do not become divisions capable of weakening the collective interests of the people.
The former governor expressed concern about what he described as the bleak future facing Ndigbo if unity, credibility, accountability and responsible leadership are not strengthened.
He said Ndigbo have for years hoped for greater political relevance, economic prosperity and responsible leadership, noting that such aspirations could not be sustained through division.
Obi further appealed to traditional institutions, political leaders and elders to encourage an environment where facts are respected and accountability is welcomed.
“Anambra belongs to all of us. The Igbo project belongs to all of us. And the future we leave for the next generation must be greater than the disagreements of today,” he said.
He concluded with the Igbo proverb, “Otu osisi anaghị eme ọhịa”, meaning “One tree does not make a forest,” while urging leaders to place the interests of Ndigbo above individual disagreements.
