At least nine passengers have been killed after gunmen opened fire on a commercial bus travelling towards Jos in Plateau State, leaving several others injured.
The attack occurred at about 9:40 p.m. at Dungus Junction in Kuru community, Jos South Local Government Area, shortly after the driver reportedly stopped to allow some passengers to alight.
The attackers opened fire on the vehicle, reportedly riddling it with bullets and killing passengers inside. Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals for treatment.
Some of the victims who initially survived the shooting were later reported to have died while receiving medical attention, according to community sources.
Lawan Suleiman, a teacher and neighbour of one of the victims, confirmed the incident and identified the driver as Ibrahim, whom he described as his former student.
Suleiman said three of those killed were from Bukuru community, adding that the bodies had been deposited at a hospital while relatives made arrangements for their burial.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders, also confirmed the attack, saying the victims were travelling to Jos when the gunmen targeted the bus.
Tengwong disclosed that a member of Operation Rainbow was among those killed, while other injured passengers were taken to hospitals.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of travellers on roads around Jos, particularly during nighttime journeys, as the circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear.
