Efforts by troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) to resolve a dispute between farmers and herders in Kwatas Village, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, have ended without an agreement between the two parties.
The dispute reportedly stemmed from an alleged incident of farm destruction recorded in the community on August 31, 2026.
Following the development, troops of Sector 5, OPEP, intervened at about 1:30 p.m. on September 1 in an attempt to prevent the disagreement from escalating into violence.
According to a military situation report, the troops brought the affected farmers and herders together and initiated discussions aimed at finding an amicable solution to the dispute.
However, the two sides were unable to reach a compromise on the terms for resolving the matter.
As a result, the case was referred to the Keystone Bokkos Division for further necessary action, while the cattle confiscated during the intervention were also handed over to the division.
The military intervention comes amid continued efforts to prevent farmer-herder disputes in parts of Plateau State from developing into broader communal conflicts.
Security personnel are expected to continue monitoring the affected area to maintain peace and forestall any reprisal attacks or further escalation.
The development highlights the challenges security agencies face in resolving local disputes where disagreements over farmland, livestock and alleged crop destruction remain sensitive issues.
