The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that it is investigating the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, AIG Moshood Jimoh, over corruption allegations made by social media personality, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
The Force disclosed that AIG Jimoh has been invited for questioning as part of an internal administrative review, while the criminal case linked to the allegations is already before a court of competent jurisdiction.
The police also confirmed that Otse has been invited to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja, to substantiate the claims he has made publicly.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.
According to the statement, the criminal matter referenced by VDM was investigated and charged to court following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“The criminal matter referenced in public commentary was investigated and is now before a court of competent jurisdiction, following the advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP). As the matter is sub judice, its adjudication rests solely with the judiciary,” the statement said.
The Force stressed that it would not litigate the matter in the media or allow public campaigns to influence the judicial process.
“The Force will not try this case in the media, nor will it allow its outcome to be shaped by public campaigns or commentary seeking to prejudge the officers or parties involved,” it added.
On the administrative aspect of the matter, the police stated that the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force CID had invited AIG Jimoh for questioning over the allegations.
It further revealed that on July 30, 2026, the FCID formally invited VDM to appear at its Abuja headquarters to provide evidence in support of his allegations.
“These steps reflect the Force’s standing commitment to investigate all credible allegations of misconduct, regardless of the rank of the officer involved or the public profile of the complainant, through its established channels, including the Force CID, the Force Complaint Response Unit, and, where applicable, the Office of the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement noted.
For several weeks, VDM has published a series of videos accusing AIG Jimoh of corruption.
He alleged that officers under Jimoh’s supervision during his tenure as Commissioner of Police in Lagos framed businessman Ahmed Tajudeen Akanbi in connection with the killings of Sheriff Ishola Salami in April 2023 and Prince Ademola Akinloye in August 2024 in the Ajiran area of Eti-Osa, Lagos.
According to VDM, two suspects arrested in January 2026 initially confessed to involvement in the Salami murder without mentioning Akanbi, but later statements implicating the businessman were allegedly obtained under pressure and torture.
The social media personality repeatedly challenged AIG Jimoh to produce the original statements of the suspects, insisting that if his claims were proven false, he should face the full weight of the law. He has continued releasing follow-up videos calling for an independent review of the case.
Reacting to the controversy, the police reiterated that disciplinary matters involving officers are governed by the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, Force Orders and other established administrative procedures.
While affirming Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of expression and to demand accountability from public institutions, the Force cautioned against the spread of unverified allegations.
“Freedom of expression does not extend to defamation or the amplification of unsubstantiated allegations as a means of compelling disciplinary outcomes outside due process,” the statement said.
The police added that any officer found culpable after investigation would be sanctioned in accordance with the law, while individuals found to have deliberately made false allegations capable of damaging the reputation of officers or the institution could also face legal consequences.
The Force urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation extended by the FCID and allow both the administrative investigation and the ongoing court proceedings to run their lawful course.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains an institution founded on law, discipline and accountability. No officer is above the law, and no genuine complaint is ignored; nor will any officer be sanctioned outside the procedures prescribed by law,” the statement concluded.
