Outspoken political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has stirred controversy with a scathing critique of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his absence at the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Omokri questioned Obi’s priorities and political message to Nigerians — especially those from the North — citing that the former Anambra governor once traveled 5,600 kilometres to Rome to allegedly “gatecrash” the funeral of Pope Francis (a symbolic scenario), yet could not journey just 500 kilometres to attend the burial of Nigeria’s immediate past president in Daura, Katsina State.
“When Pope Francis died, Peter Obi, although not invited, entered a plane and travelled 5,600 kilometres to Rome and attempted to gatecrash the funeral until he was saved by President Tinubu. But when the immediate past President of his own country died, Obi could not be bothered to travel 500 kilometres to attend his funeral,” Omokri wrote on social media Tuesday morning.
Omokri further implied that Obi’s actions could be interpreted as disregard for the North (Mutanen Arewa) and a sign of political insensitivity at a time when national unity should be emphasized.
