Rivers Tackles Cult-related Killings

Rivers State Governor, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike

Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike of Rivers State has declared war on cult-related killings in some parts of the state. No fewer than 25 persons, including two police officers and a traditional ruler, have been killed in the past 10 days in the state from clashes among rival cult groups in communities in Obio/Akpor, Eleme, Ikwerre, Etche, Emohua, Port Harcourt City and Khana local government areas. Wike told members of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers who visited him to congratulate him on his re-election at Government House, Port Harcourt, that his administration would take the fight to cultists. He said: “We will not allow these cultists who want to paint the state black continue to cause mayhem. We will take the fight to them. Enough is enough. These people cannot continue to kill our people.” The governor revealed that he met with the State Security Council on Sunday night to work out modalities on how to rid the state of cult-related killings. Wike, therefore, urged the monarchs to support the state government in the fight against cultism, saying that prompt information would be useful in tracking down the criminal elements. The governor, who stated that he will jealously guard the interest of Rivers State and ensure further development of the state, said: “I am a total, unrepentant Rivers’ man. I will continue to jealously guard the interest of the state.” He thanked the traditional rulers for the solidarity visit but regretted that some of them were involved in party politics, despite his advice that they should be apolitical. Earlier, the chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Amayanabo of Opobo, King Dandeson Douglas-Jaja, said that they were in the Government House to congratulate Wike for his well-deserved victory at the polls. Douglas-Jaja thanked the governor for extending the olive branch of peace to his rivals and urged the opponents to accept the governor’s offer.
