Row Deepens as APC Slams Makinde for “Reckless” Opposition Statement

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over comments it described as inciting and dangerous, following his remarks at an opposition summit in Ibadan.

In a press statement issued on April 26, 2026, by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party accused Governor Makinde of invoking the violent history of Operation Wetie to allegedly stir unrest and promote a narrative of Nigeria drifting into a one-party state.

The APC described the governor’s comments as “reckless” and a “clear and present threat” to peace and national stability, stressing that such rhetoric is unbecoming of a sitting governor who serves as the chief security officer of his state.

“It is particularly disturbing for a sitting Governor to conjure one of the darkest episodes of political violence in Nigeria’s history to threaten violence against the people and government,” the statement read, adding that Makinde’s remarks go beyond political opposition and risk fueling lawlessness.

The party called on security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously, urging them to act swiftly to safeguard lives, property, and Nigeria’s democratic order.

The APC further emphasized that constitutional immunity does not absolve public office holders of accountability, warning that no individual, regardless of status, should make statements capable of endangering national security.

In its response, the ruling party also dismissed claims by opposition figures about the country sliding into a one-party system, attributing challenges within opposition parties to internal crises, poor leadership, and unresolved conflicts.

The statement referenced internal issues within opposition parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), arguing that their struggles stem from internal mismanagement rather than external suppression.

The APC reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that Nigeria’s political space remains open and competitive, with multiple parties actively participating in the electoral process.

Reiterating its readiness for the 2027 general elections, the party said it would continue to organize and mobilize effectively, while rejecting what it described as “fear-mongering” and “false narratives” from opposition leaders.

The statement concluded by assuring Nigerians of the APC-led administration’s dedication to peace, unity, and national development under its Renewed Hope Agenda.
