A student of the College of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Okofia-Nnewi, has made a public appeal for intervention over the deteriorating condition of roads used to access the institution.
The footage gives a clear picture of the challenge. Sections of the route are unpaved, muddy and waterlogged, with sizeable pools of stagnant rainwater. Even pedestrians can be seen having to carefully navigate the uneven ground and find their way around the water just to continue their journey.
In her narration, the student appeals for the authorities to come to their aid and restore proper access to the institution.
This is not an entirely new complaint. Reports concerning CHS Okofia have previously highlighted poor access roads. In August 2024, the then Acting Vice-Chancellor reportedly promised palliative measures on an access road after concerns were presented by College staff. More recently, in February 2026, UNIZIK’s Governing Council declared a “state of emergency” on infrastructure at the College of Health Sciences and announced plans for significant upgrades.
Yet the condition captured in this latest footage shows why students are still asking for attention.
For an institution training future doctors and other health professionals, safe and dependable access should not be too much to ask.
We call on Nnamdi Azikiwe University management, Nnewi North Local Government and the Anambra State Government to examine the affected access routes, clarify responsibility for them, and ensure that the necessary rehabilitation and drainage works are carried out.
Students should be concentrating on getting to lectures, not calculating where to step or jump after rainfall.
