The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that the Supreme Court of Nigeria has reserved judgment in a series of appeals and cross-appeals concerning the party’s leadership crisis.
In a press statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the apex court heard arguments from all parties involved after adopting their respective legal processes, and adjourned for judgment to a date yet to be communicated.
The appeals stem from earlier rulings by the Court of Appeal, which upheld decisions of the Federal High Court delivered by Justices Omotosho and Lifu. The lower courts had nullified the party’s convention held in Ibadan and affirmed the suspension of key party figures, including Samuel Anyanwu and A.K. Ajibade, SAN.
Dissatisfied with the rulings, the PDP approached the Supreme Court, arguing that the matter falls within the internal affairs of the party and is therefore outside the jurisdiction of the courts. The respondents, led by Anyanwu, also filed a cross-appeal challenging aspects of the judgment, particularly the decision upholding their suspension.
Following the hearing, the Supreme Court reserved its judgment, signaling that a final decision will be delivered at a later date.
The PDP, in its statement, urged its members to remain steadfast, expressing confidence that the apex court’s eventual ruling will uphold democratic principles and safeguard Nigeria’s multi-party system.
The outcome of the case is expected to have significant implications for the party’s leadership structure and its preparations ahead of future elections.
