Arise News presenter, Rufai Oseni, has questioned the Benue State Government’s response to the reported attack on the convoy of New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the state.
Oseni raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the conflicting accounts about whether the state government was aware of Obi’s visit.
“At first, the state government said they were not aware. All of a sudden, it turned out that they had already written a letter to the police. Why is it that at the exact point Mr Peter Obi’s convoy was passing, thugs decided to attack? There is no way they were not aware,” Oseni said.
He argued that state governments should provide a welcoming environment for opposition politicians visiting their states for campaign activities, regardless of political affiliation.
According to him, the principle should apply equally to all political parties, noting that several governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) travelled to Osun State during the recently concluded election without facing questions over their presence.
“I think it is only fair for every governor to welcome any opposition party that comes to their state for a campaign. We were all here when several APC governors travelled to Osun State for the just-concluded election, and nobody questioned them,” he added.
