President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, citing pressing family considerations.
In a statement personally signed on Tuesday, the President expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s “decades of distinguished service” to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, commending his dedication, professionalism and efforts toward strengthening the country’s internal security architecture.
“I thank him for his decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and our nation. His dedication, professionalism and commitment to strengthening our internal security architecture are deeply appreciated,” the President stated.
Following the development, Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police as Acting Inspector General of Police with immediate effect.
The President expressed confidence in Disu’s capacity to lead the Force at a critical time, citing his experience, operational depth and leadership qualities as key attributes that would ensure steady direction.
In line with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu disclosed that he would soon convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector General of Police before forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
