Tinubu Tasks New Envoys on Investment Drive, Reorders Foreign Policy Priorities

New Envoys

President Bola Tinubu has directed Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners to intensify efforts toward attracting foreign investment, strengthening strategic partnerships, and improving the country’s global image.

The President gave the charge on Monday during the opening of an induction course for the envoys at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. He was represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Tinubu said the appointments of the envoys reflected confidence in their ability to advance Nigeria’s interests globally, especially at a time when the international system is undergoing rapid transformation driven by geopolitical shifts, economic uncertainties, technological changes, climate challenges, and emerging security threats.

According to him, these developments have made diplomacy more critical than ever, urging the envoys to adopt a modern, results-driven approach that combines traditional diplomacy with digital engagement, public diplomacy, and strategic communication.

The President also stressed the importance of promoting Nigeria’s image abroad by effectively communicating the achievements of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He further called on the envoys to be proactive in fostering partnerships, boosting trade relations, and attracting foreign direct investment and technology into the country, while prioritising the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.

In a significant policy move, Tinubu announced a reordering of Nigeria’s foreign policy framework, known as the 4D Doctrine. Previously anchored on Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora, the framework has now been rearranged to prioritise Demography, Development, Diaspora, and Democracy.

He explained that the adjustment places Nigerians at the centre of foreign policy, ensuring that international engagements yield tangible benefits for citizens.

“This re-ordering has put the Nigerian people at the centre of our foreign policy agenda and is aimed at harnessing outcomes for their maximum benefit,” the President said.

Tinubu emphasised the need for professionalism, integrity, and patriotism among the envoys, noting that they serve as custodians of Nigeria’s image abroad. He also urged them to maintain accountability, prudence in resource management, and a clear focus on measurable outcomes that support economic growth and national development.

The President encouraged the envoys to take full advantage of the induction programme, describing it as essential for equipping them with the knowledge and skills required for effective diplomatic service.

He also commended the National Assembly for the swift confirmation of the nominees, urging the envoys to justify the confidence placed in them.

“You have a special responsibility in helping to reposition Nigeria in global affairs. The world is watching,” he added.
