U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the cancellation of planned military strikes against Iran, claiming that discussions with the Islamic Republic had reached the highest levels of Iranian leadership and received approval from all parties involved.
In a statement released on Thursday, Trump said the United States had been preparing to carry out strikes and bombings against Iran but that the operation was called off following what he described as a breakthrough in negotiations.
According to Trump, discussions and final terms of a proposed agreement have been approved “in both concept and great detail” by multiple regional and international stakeholders, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt.
The U.S. president stated that while military action had been halted, a naval blockade would remain in place until the agreement is formally finalized and signed.
“Time and place of the signing [are] to be announced shortly,” Trump said.
