The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently unprepared to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Wike made the statement during a live media parley held in Abuja on Friday, where he spoke candidly about the internal state of the PDP and the party’s lack of cohesion ahead of the next electoral cycle.
According to the former governor of Rivers State, the PDP is not demonstrating the seriousness required to reclaim power from the ruling APC. He described the party as fragmented and distracted by internal power struggles.
“The PDP is not ready for the 2027 election. It is very obvious. For instance, I have an examination and I am going to class to read. Indeed, am I reading? Am I studying? You don’t need to deceive anybody that you are reading. You are only trying to read so that people will see that you have carried your bag to class. That is the situation of the PDP,” Wike explained.
He noted that although opposition figures nationwide are making attempts to forge a united coalition to challenge the APC, entrenched divergent interests and internal wrangling have continued to stall meaningful progress.
“Power struggle cannot help the party,” he said, alluding to the persistent factional crises that have plagued the PDP in recent years.
The statement is expected to stir debate within the PDP and among political analysts, particularly as conversations about coalition-building and party restructuring intensify ahead of the 2027 polls.
