The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered authorities to investigate and curb illegal car racing in residential parts of Abuja, insisting that such activities pose a risk to public safety.
Wike gave the directive on Monday while inspecting ongoing projects across the FCT, following concerns raised over the dangers reckless car racing poses to residents and other road users.
The minister said that although no formal complaint had been submitted to his office, the concerns were serious enough to warrant immediate attention.
According to him, he would engage the appropriate traffic authorities to ensure that car racing is not allowed in residential neighborhoods.
He stressed that motorsport enthusiasts should use only designated venues approved for such activities instead of public roads where people live.
“No formal complaint has been made, but now that we have heard from you, I will check the traffic section and let them understand that we will not allow that,” Wike said.
He added, “If they want to carry out their car racing, they should know that there are designated areas for it, not where we have people’s residences.”
The minister reaffirmed that protecting lives and maintaining public order remain key priorities of the FCT Administration, warning that activities capable of endangering residents would not be tolerated.
