The Cross River State Government has confirmed the identification and isolation of 10 additional persons showing symptoms of COVID-19 after contact with a Chinese national who reportedly reintroduced the virus into Nigeria.

State Epidemiologist, Dr Inyang Ekpenyong, revealed that the individuals were identified during contact tracing at the index case’s workplace in Akamkpa Local Government Area. Their movements have been restricted to their homes to prevent further spread.

She added that the infected foreign national is currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and is responding to care.

Dr Ekpenyong cautioned residents that COVID-19 has not been completely eliminated, urging continued adherence to preventive measures including hand hygiene, use of face masks, and other recommended safety protocols.

Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Egbe Ayuk, assured that all public health response systems have been activated to contain the situation.

“COVID-19 is not peculiar to Nigeria. But we’re determined to contain it. There’s no cause for alarm,” he stated.

Authorities say monitoring and contact tracing are ongoing, as efforts intensify to prevent any potential outbreak.
