Reports suggest that the All Progressives Congress (APC) could face significant internal challenges leading up to the 2027 general elections, with loyalists of the late President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly considering leaving the party.

The passing of former President Buhari on July 13, 2025, has re-ignited speculations about the political future of his loyalists, particularly those from the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc, which he founded.

Some of these members are said to feel sidelined by the current federal administration and may be looking for alternative political platforms.

While some prominent figures from the CPC bloc, such as former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, and former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, have publicly affirmed their commitment to the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 bid, there are indications of underlying discontent.

There have been reports of an emerging opposition coalition, notably the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the proposed All Democratic Alliance (ADA), which includes figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

Some analysts suggest that these alliances are actively seeking to attract aggrieved members from the APC, including those who were loyal to Buhari.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has tried to dismiss these insinuations, stating that “There is nothing like taking CPC away.

Our father, former President Muhammadu Buhari, is CPC, no other person. When he says CPC is with you, CPC is with you, and the day he says CPC is not with you, CPC is not with you.

He keeps carrying his 12 million voters along with him anywhere he goes and he is not going anywhere from APC.”

However, the political landscape remains dynamic. The perceived “snub” of Vice President Kashim Shettima at a recent North-East meeting for Tinubu’s re-election endorsement also highlights existing internal divisions within the APC.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the APC will likely need to address these internal fissures to maintain a united front.

The actions of Buhari’s loyalists and the ability of opposition coalitions to capitalize on any disaffection within the ruling party will be key factors shaping the political narrative.
