
The House of Representatives joint committees on Defence, Army, Navy, and Air Force says the appointment of new Service Chiefs presents a critical opportunity to restore Nigerians’ confidence in the country’s security system and ensure greater accountability in the Armed Forces.
Led by the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson, the committees made this known in Abuja during the screening of the nominees,Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shuaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; and Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas recently appointed by President Bola Tinubu.
Benson said the exercise was an important constitutional duty designed to ensure transparency, competence, and professionalism in the leadership of the Armed Forces. He noted that the screening provided an opportunity to evaluate the nominees’ readiness to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, cyber threats, and maritime insecurity, adding that Nigerians expected results and renewed confidence in the military.
In their responses, the nominees pledged to reform and strengthen the Armed Forces for improved operational performance. Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General Oluyede, assured lawmakers of his commitment to personnel welfare and closer collaboration with the National Assembly.
