The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that the era of ballot box snatching and manual manipulation of election results is over, citing the commission’s expanded use of technology to safeguard the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the statement in Abuja during a meeting with the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), where both agencies pledged to strengthen voter education and civic awareness nationwide.
According to the INEC chairman, technologies such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) have significantly improved election transparency, making it increasingly difficult to alter results after votes have been cast.
He, however, warned that voter apathy and misinformation remain major threats to credible elections, stressing that Nigerians must be educated on the voting process and the safeguards now in place. INEC also called for stronger collaboration with the NOA to encourage greater voter participation and combat vote-buying and fake election information ahead of the 2027 polls.
