Electoral Bill Controversy: Kenneth Okonkwo Calls Akpabio an Enemy of Democracy

Actor and lawyer Kenneth Okonkwo has called for the immediate resignation or removal of Senate President Godswill Akpabio following the Senate’s decision to reject electronic transmission of election results in the ongoing Electoral Act amendment process.

Reacting to the development, Okonkwo described Akpabio as an “enemy of democracy,” accusing him of allegedly sidelining democratic procedures in the handling of the bill. He claimed that the provision for electronic transmission of results was removed without being subjected to proper debate among senators who had earlier approved it.

According to Okonkwo, the Senate President “cunningly” altered a key democratic safeguard, warning that such actions pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s electoral integrity and democratic future.

“His cup is full,” Okonkwo said, urging Nigerians to rise and demand Akpabio’s resignation. He further alleged that failure to resist what he termed legislative authoritarianism could embolden the National Assembly to support undemocratic outcomes in the future.

Okonkwo also issued a broader warning, claiming that unchecked legislative actions could pave the way for extreme political outcomes, including attempts to elongate tenure in office.
