At least 17 people have been confirmed dead following a head-on collision between a coaster bus and a trailer along the Enugu route on Sunday evening.
The victims were returning from a traditional wedding ceremony in Enugu when the accident occurred. The majority of the deceased were traders from Owerri Road Market on Bonny Street in Umuahia, Abia State.
Among the fatalities are five siblings who were traveling together on the bus. Some passengers who were initially listed as unconscious have since died from their injuries, bringing the death toll to 17.
The Owerri Road Market community has been plunged into mourning, with trading activities subdued today as news of the tragedy spread. Witnesses report scenes of grief throughout Bonny Street as residents and fellow traders learned of the multiple casualties.
