A tanker driver, Alagbe Hezekiah, has been praised for his bravery after risking his life to prevent a potentially devastating fire disaster in Iwo, Osun State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 17, 2026, when Hezekiah was supplying diesel at a filling station around Feesu Junction, along the Iwo-Ibadan Expressway. His tanker reportedly caught fire suddenly while the operation was ongoing.
Despite efforts to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, the fire reportedly became uncontrollable and began threatening the filling station, nearby businesses and residential buildings.
While people around the area reportedly fled to safety, Hezekiah made a courageous decision to move the burning tanker away from the populated area.
He climbed into the burning vehicle and drove it towards an uninhabited riverbank, despite flames engulfing the truck.
At the riverbank, he reportedly detached the truck head from the burning tank, helping to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding populated areas.
Hezekiah said he was aware that the decision could cost him his life but chose to take the risk rather than allow innocent people and properties to be endangered.
Fortunately, no life was reportedly lost in the incident.
Hezekiah, an indigene of Ogbomoso, has been driving tankers since 2004 and has more than two decades of experience behind the wheel.
His actions have attracted widespread commendation, with many describing him as an example of courage, selflessness and professionalism.
The tanker driver also appealed to the Oyo and Osun State Governments to improve the condition of roads in the two states. He further urged tanker drivers to always prioritise human lives and safety while carrying out their duties.
