Kenneth Okonkwo

Legal practitioner and political commentator has strongly criticised the Chairman of the (INEC), , describing him as “incompetent” and “irresponsible” following a recent television interview.

In a statement reacting to the chairman’s appearance on on , Okonkwo said he was alarmed by Yakubu’s claim that he first became aware of a Court of Appeal judgment involving INEC through social media.

According to Okonkwo, the revelation raises serious concerns about the leadership and operational efficiency of the electoral body, noting that INEC was a party to the case and had legal representation.

He argued that it was unacceptable for the head of such a critical national institution to rely on social media for information on a matter of legal importance, rather than receiving direct updates from counsel or official channels.

“What this means is that what we have is a social media chairman who takes decisions based on social media comments rather than pure legal principles,” Okonkwo said, expressing disappointment over what he described as a decline in the quality of decisions emanating from the commission.

The outspoken critic further alleged that the situation reflects poorly on INEC’s credibility and could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
