Afrobeats star Burna Boy has stirred reactions after naming Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha as his greatest footballer of all time, snubbing the usual Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo debate.
During an interview with ESPN, the singer was asked to name his picks across different football categories, and he had Okocha at the top of his list.
When asked about the best playmaker, Burna Boy immediately answered, “Best playmaker is Jay-Jay Okocha.”
He also picked the former Super Eagles captain as the “Best ever African player of all time,” before giving him an even bigger honour when asked to name the greatest player in football history.
“I’ll say Jay-Jay Okocha. See, it’s between him and like, like who else? Pelé. I’m not doing that Ronaldo and Messi stuff,” Burna Boy declared.
The Grammy-winning singer also named Harry Kane as his best-ever striker and Tshwala Bam (Remix) as his favourite football song.
On the best young player, Burna Boy picked Lamine Yamal, while adding Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo “just ’cause of Man U.”
He also named Manchester United as his best football club and Mainoo as his favourite player at the club.
For the best sporting event to perform at, the singer had one clear answer: “FIFA World Cup.”
