Former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 election in Nasarawa State.
Adamu was declared the winner of the party’s replacement primary election held on Saturday in Lafia, the state capital.
The exercise was conducted following the decision of the party to replace its earlier candidate, Musa Adamu Angba.
Chairman of the SDP Electoral Committee for Nasarawa State, Barrister Joseph Achille, announced Adamu as the winner after the votes from the state’s local government areas were collated.
According to Achille, the primary was conducted across the state and witnessed by party delegates, with 28,637 delegates reportedly participating in the exercise.
He said the votes from the various wards were duly collated at the local government level and described the exercise as peaceful, lawful, free, fair and credible.
Achille subsequently declared Adamu the SDP’s candidate and flag-bearer for the 2027 Nasarawa governorship election.
The declaration was greeted by cheers and chants from supporters who gathered at the venue of the primary at Ta’al Hotel in Lafia.
Speaking after his emergence, Adamu thanked the party and its members, promising to provide what he described as purposeful leadership if elected governor.
The former police chief said his administration would focus on addressing what he described as poor governance in the state, while improving basic infrastructure and social services.
He particularly identified roads, healthcare, agriculture and the development of the state’s solid mineral resources as major areas of focus.
According to Adamu, many roads in rural communities across Nasarawa require urgent attention, while healthcare facilities must be strengthened beyond the major urban centres.
He also described Nasarawa as an agrarian state with significant potential for agricultural development.
“We shall invest so much in it so as to feed our families, to feed the people of the state, and also the country at large,” he said.
On solid minerals, the former IGP expressed concern over the manner in which the state’s mineral resources are currently being exploited.
He pledged that, if elected, his administration would review the sector to ensure that the resources provide greater economic benefits to the people of Nasarawa.
Adamu further promised that his campaign would focus on clear and measurable commitments, with specific plans for each local government area.
The former IGP was formally presented to Nasarawa delegates before the primary by the national leadership of the SDP.
The party leadership described his emergence as a significant development, highlighting his previous service as Inspector-General of Police and his experience in public administration.
The event also attracted the SDP presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, and other national leaders of the party.
Supporters at the gathering repeatedly chanted “IG Governor” as Adamu was presented to the delegates.
The SDP leadership subsequently urged members across Nasarawa State to unite and work towards victory in the 2027 general elections.
Adamu’s emergence sets the stage for the former police chief to take his campaign to the electorate as the SDP seeks to make significant gains in Nasarawa State ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
