Residents Question Local Government Accountability as FCT Roads, Waste Management Face Criticism

Uju

Residents have raised concerns over the state of inner roads, refuse disposal, streetlights and sanitation across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), calling on local government officials to demonstrate greater accountability in the management of public funds.

The concerns followed a revelation by Belinda Uju that her local government chairman in Anambra State reportedly receives ₦740 million monthly from the Federal Government, prompting questions about how local government allocations are being utilised and the impact of the funds on ordinary residents.

In a statement highlighting the situation, the concerned resident questioned what local government officials across the country were doing with the allocations they receive, particularly in communities where basic infrastructure and essential public services remain inadequate.

Attention was also drawn to the condition of Abuja’s inner roads and neighbourhoods following the Area Council Municipal Area Council (AMAC) elections, with concerns that several communities were yet to experience the level of development expected from their elected representatives.

According to the statement, parts of the FCT are increasingly experiencing indiscriminate refuse disposal, with waste reportedly being dumped openly along streets and in residential neighbourhoods, including some highbrow areas.

The situation has raised concerns about the effectiveness of waste management and environmental sanitation efforts across the territory.

The condition of inner roads was also highlighted, with APO Resettlement cited as an area where some potholes have reportedly been patched with a mixture of cement and sand, raising questions about the quality and durability of road maintenance.

Beyond roads and sanitation, the statement identified non-functional streetlights, missing road markings, inadequate reflectors and poorly indicated turning points on major roads as additional concerns requiring urgent attention.

It warned that poorly maintained roads and inadequate road safety infrastructure could expose motorists and other road users to greater risks, particularly at night.

The resident further argued that Nigerians continue to pay taxes and levies while spending their personal resources to meet basic needs and address challenges that should ordinarily receive government attention.

Against this backdrop, questions were raised about the gap between public allocations and the visible delivery of essential services in local communities.

The statement specifically called on the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, to intensify efforts to address the needs of residents across AMAC.

The chairman was urged to prioritise the rehabilitation of inner roads, improve street cleanliness, strengthen refuse collection and disposal, enhance sanitation in markets and support measures to improve community security.

It also emphasised the importance of citizen participation in governance, urging residents to report infrastructure deficiencies, ask questions about public spending and engage elected officials on issues affecting their communities.

According to the statement, effective governance requires more than winning elections or occupying public office; it demands measurable results, improved living conditions and accountability to the people.

The concerns have renewed calls for local government officials to demonstrate how public resources are being translated into tangible improvements in their respective communities.

The statement maintained that residents should not remain passive when confronted with poor infrastructure and inadequate public services, stressing that sustained civic engagement is essential to achieving better governance.

It concluded with a question directed at residents across the FCT and beyond: Are communities feeling the impact of their local government chairmen through improved roads, cleaner streets, better sanitation and other essential services?
