French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the violence that followed nationwide protests over rising living costs, expressing “anger and shame” after shops were looted, public buildings attacked and the historic City Hall in Limoges set ablaze.
“Nothing justifies it, nothing explains it, nothing excuses it. Tonight, we all feel anger and shame,” Macron said in a televised address on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
He blamed what he described as “insurrectionist elements from radical far-left groups, joined by numerous delinquents,” insisting that those responsible for destruction and looting would be held accountable.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump linked the unrest to immigration in a post on Truth Social, calling on France to close its borders.
Macron, however, focused his remarks on violent groups and criminals, distinguishing them from peaceful demonstrators protesting rising living costs and public services.
The unrest adds to political tensions in France ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
