Nollywood actor Olaide Olabanji has sparked debate after questioning the decision of some entertainers to continue supporting politicians despite the worsening challenges facing Nigerians.
Olabanji argued that entertainers, as influential members of society, have a responsibility to speak truth to power and demand better governance rather than remaining silent because of political patronage.
According to the actor, Nigeria’s struggles with inadequate healthcare, electricity, roads, security and economic hardship should concern everyone, including members of the entertainment industry.
He particularly expressed concern over the number of Nigerian actors who reportedly become dependent on public donations when they fall ill, despite the huge influence the entertainment industry wields.
Olabanji questioned why Nigerians, including celebrities, should have to raise money on social media to treat sick colleagues when the country ought to have functional hospitals capable of handling major illnesses.
He also criticised entertainers who publicly support politicians by participating in political events or distributing food items, describing such actions as placing personal interests above the welfare of the wider population.
The actor further challenged his colleagues to consider whether whatever financial benefits they received during previous election campaigns are still enough to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
Olabanji maintained that entertainers should use their platforms to demand accountability from political leaders, warning that supporting poor governance ultimately affects everyone, including those who benefit from political patronage.
