Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri has raised concerns over the circulation of fake and potentially harmful products in Nigeria, warning that the development poses a serious threat to public health.
Kadiri, in a public message to Nigerians, expressed worry that consumers often purchase products believing they are safe, only to discover that some may be poorly produced, contaminated or counterfeit.
According to the actress, the situation is particularly disturbing because of the potential consequences for children and other vulnerable members of society.
“Dear Nigerians, I’m speaking to you today with a heavy heart and deep concern about the circulation of fake products in our country,” she said.
Kadiri narrated a personal experience involving garlic she purchased and blended. She said that after returning downstairs some time later, she noticed that the colour of the blended garlic had changed.
The actress said the experience prompted her to question the quality and safety of products being sold to Nigerians.
She expressed concern over the possible health implications of consuming contaminated or counterfeit products, particularly amid reports of serious illnesses affecting children.
“Every day, we buy different products believing they are safe, but sadly, some are poorly produced, contaminated, harmful and fake. This is a threat to human life,” she said.
Kadiri further urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to intensify its monitoring and enforcement efforts to protect Nigerians from fake and substandard products.
She called for greater vigilance among consumers and stronger action against individuals and businesses involved in the production and distribution of potentially dangerous products.
