Stakeholders in Nkwelle-Ezunaka community have issued a strong re-rebuttal to allegations against former Anambra State House of Assembly member, Hon. Charles Obimma, insisting that claims linking him to thuggery and disruption during the recent community election are false, malicious, and aimed at covering up unconstitutional actions.
In a statement titled “Setting the Record Straight with the Letter from the Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters,” the group accused Willy Okafor and his associates of engaging in a “desperate search for a scapegoat” to justify what they described as an illegal and irregular election process.
According to the statement, the purported election of the Nkwelle-Ezunaka President General was marred by “impunity of the highest order.” The group referenced an official letter dated 21 December 2025, signed by the Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, which reportedly halted the planned election and directed the outgoing President General to strictly comply with the Nkwelle-Ezunaka Union Constitution of 2004.
The letter, addressed to the community through the outgoing leadership, instructed that any election must be free, fair, credible, and peaceful, and was scheduled for 30 December 2025 only after full compliance with constitutional provisions.
However, the statement alleged that the outgoing President General disregarded both the community constitution and the commissioner’s directive, proceeding to conduct the election without meeting mandatory requirements. As a result, many aspirants reportedly boycotted the exercise in protest over alleged irregularities.
Reacting to accusations made against Hon. Obimma, the group described the narrative circulating in some quarters as a “gross distortion of facts and deliberate falsehood.” They clarified that Hon. Obimma’s presence at the venue was solely to express concerns about the unconstitutional nature of the process.
“He peacefully demanded to address the community, was granted audience, and advised them on the dangers of disregarding their constitution and disobeying the lawful instructions of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters,” the statement said.
The group dismissed allegations of armed thugs and intimidation as baseless and unsupported by evidence, describing them as fabrications allegedly orchestrated by individuals they labeled as “enemies of the Nkwelle-Ezunaka community.”
Reaffirming the community’s right to elect its leaders, the stakeholders stressed that such elections must strictly follow constitutional guidelines. They disclosed that oral and written complaints by concerned and reputable indigenes would soon be made public.
They urged members of the public to exercise caution and not be swayed by what they termed malicious propaganda, while calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.
“Hon. Charles Obimma remains a respected son of the soil whose contributions to the development of Nkwelle-Ezunaka and Anambra State are well documented,” the statement concluded, expressing confidence that the truth would ultimately exonerate him.
The group also referenced the commissioner’s letter, which they say is attached as evidence to support their position.
