Atiku Demands Names of INEC Officials Behind Alleged AI-Generated Images in Voter Register

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has demanded that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) identify and sanction officials allegedly responsible for the inclusion of Artificial Intelligence-generated photographs and other irregularities in Nigeria’s voter register.

Atiku made the demand in a statement issued by the Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Phrank Shaibu.

He described INEC’s admission that AI-generated images and other irregularities were introduced into the voter register by its registration officers as a serious development that raises questions about the commission’s credibility and internal security measures.

The former vice president called on opposition leaders and the international community to demand an independent forensic audit of the voter register, full disclosure of the alleged irregularities and accountability for those involved.

Atiku also criticised the commission’s handling of the controversy, arguing that it was unacceptable for INEC to acknowledge that its officials compromised the register while failing to publicly identify those responsible.

He questioned how a database containing the electoral information of millions of Nigerians could be vulnerable to manipulation, suggesting that the commission’s security safeguards required urgent scrutiny.

According to him, INEC must disclose the evidence surrounding the alleged manipulation, identify the officials involved and explain why those responsible have not been suspended or prosecuted.

Atiku further warned against any attempt to quietly remove the questionable entries without preserving evidence of how the irregularities occurred.

He also called for an independent investigation into allegations that more than 20 million AI-generated images may have entered the voter register.

The ADC presidential candidate maintained that the commission must expose those responsible, disclose the involvement of any contractors and subject the voter register and relevant election materials to independent scrutiny.

He warned that the controversy could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and raise further concerns about the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
