Atiku Denies Quitting Politics, Warns of Disinformation Campaign

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that he has decided to retire from active politics.

In a statement released on Monday by the Atiku Media Office in Abuja, the 2023 presidential candidate described the claim as “entirely false and deliberately misleading,” alleging that it was part of a coordinated attempt to create confusion and weaken the growing momentum around the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The statement clarified that Atiku had not held any recent national meeting with stakeholders of the party where such a decision was discussed. According to the media office, the former vice president’s only recent engagement was with ADC stakeholders in Adamawa State last Thursday.

It added that a decision as significant as withdrawing from active politics would never be communicated through rumours, anonymous sources, or social media speculation.

“An issue as fundamental and consequential as exiting active politics cannot, and would never, be communicated through rumours, faceless sources, or third-party fabrication,” the statement said.

The media office further alleged that the false report was being pushed by “anti-democratic elements” who are unsettled by what it described as a growing national movement aimed at rescuing Nigeria from the failures of the current administration.

The statement also accused unnamed government actors of sponsoring the narrative out of fear of the political developments ahead.

Supporters of Atiku, members of the African Democratic Congress, and the Nigerian public were urged to ignore the reports and remain focused on efforts to rebuild the country.

The press release was signed by the Atiku Media Office and dated March 30, 2026, in Abuja.
