Former Governor of Lagos state Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a chieftain of the All Progressive Party said that Nigeria cannot afford another civil war because this will destabilize entire West Africa and because of our population, there will be no space to accommodate Nigerians as refugees. Tinubu said this during the eight-day Fidau prayers for the first civilian governor of Lagos state, late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, he further appealed to Nigerians not to turn their present challenges into ethnic, tribal, and religious crisis.
In his speech, he said that though Nigeria is currently facing issues of banditry and insurgency which has made the country insecure, he that God Almighty who blessed the country with many resources and also made us the giants of Africa will guide us and protect us.
But to be honest with ourselves will the issue of insecurity just go away with the prayers of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, because there is a popular saying that says heaven helps those who help themselves, what is the military and police doing, before the issue of insecurity gt to this level, President Muhammadu Buhari ought to have been at alert and taken adequate steps as the Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Mr president ought to have charged his service chiefs and the Inspector general of police with the responsibility of tackling the issue of Banditry, Insurgency, and the notorious herdsmen that have migrated to the South-West, but the opposite is the case. Each time this issue goes out of proportion we see the service chiefs demand finance to acquire new equipment to aid in the fight against insurgency, in the end, it only worsens, while our military men in the heat of the battle complain that they are underequipped.
Only recently the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi requested that CCTV cameras be installed on our highways to help in the fight against the kidnappings on our high ways and #470million naira was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari to revive the project which was rejected many years back, what had suddenly changed?
All of a sudden a so-called Muslim cleric Sheihk Gumi has now allegedly become a negotiator for the federal government with the bandits as reported by some public newspapers, people who perpetrated a criminal act of kidnapping, they are now asking for amnesty and compensation for committing a crime, if this is done more coordinated criminal organizations will spring up and hold the government to ransom.
