The Rivers State House of Assembly has approved the state’s 2026 Appropriation Bill, bringing an end to months of delay over the passage of the budget.
The bill, which was unanimously passed by the 26 lawmakers during Thursday’s resumed plenary in Port Harcourt, was subsequently transmitted to Governor Siminalayi Fubara for assent.
Governor Fubara later signed the appropriation bill into law at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
The development marks a significant moment in the relationship between the Rivers State executive and legislature, as the budget approval came after a prolonged period of political tension and delays surrounding the state’s fiscal plans.
According to the Assembly, the approved budget will run through the fiscal year ending September 2, 2027.
Fubara had earlier submitted the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework to the House on June 25, setting the stage for the preparation and consideration of the annual budget.
The latest development also marks the first time since the commencement of the Fubara administration that the House, under Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, has approved the state’s budget.
With the governor’s assent, attention is now expected to shift to the implementation of the 2026 appropriation law and its impact on infrastructure, development projects and the wider economy of Rivers State.
