BREAKING: Soldier Killed, Lawmaker Escapes as Bandits Ambush Convoy in Niger

BREAKING

Suspected Lakurawa terrorists, locally referred to as bandits, on Tuesday afternoon ambushed the convoy of Hon. Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa, who represents Borgu/Agwara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Niger State, killing a soldier and injuring several others.

The attack reportedly occurred along the Lumma–Babanna road in Borgu Local Government Area as the lawmaker was en route to Babanna town for an official function.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen, who had laid an ambush around 1:00 p.m., suddenly opened fire on the convoy, catching Damisa’s security detail and aides off guard.

One soldier was killed instantly, while about eight others sustained injuries,” a local source confirmed, adding that four supporters of the lawmaker were also struck by stray bullets but survived.

The assailants allegedly vandalised about 11 vehicles, riddling them with bullets and forcing the convoy to a halt. Troops from the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Babanna, later responded and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat into the nearby forest.

Hon. Damisa was said to have escaped unhurt following the swift intervention of his security team and the timely arrival of reinforcements.

Security forces have since intensified patrols in the area as investigations continue into the attack.
