A major security operation in Otolo, Nnewi, Anambra State, has led to the discovery of an alleged criminal hideout linked to child trafficking, child labour, and the processing of chemically preserved animal skin reportedly sold as kpomo.
The operation followed intelligence gathering by the Otolo Nnewi Development Union (ONDU) in collaboration with the Agunaechemba Security Outfit. Security operatives raided two locations in Ndimgbu Otolo and Amiliba Otolo, where several suspects were apprehended.
According to community leaders, several adults, breastfeeding mothers, and minors were taken into custody, while a number of children were rescued during the operation.
Preliminary findings indicate that some of the rescued children alleged they were brought from Ebonyi State and forced to hawk the processed animal skin in different communities. Authorities are also investigating allegations of child trafficking, child exploitation, and claims that babies were taken from vulnerable young girls.
Following the operation, the Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government ordered the immediate sealing of the affected premises. All suspects and rescued victims have since been handed over to the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs for further investigation, victim support, and possible prosecution.
Authorities have stressed that the allegations remain under investigation and that those found culpable will face the full weight of the law. The operation underscores the importance of intelligence-led policing, community vigilance, and timely reporting in exposing suspected criminal networks operating within local communities.
