The Delta State Police Command has ordered the summary trial of two officers captured in a viral video allegedly extorting money from a motorist using a Point of Sale (POS) machine inside a police station in Asaba.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on January 13, 2026, involved officers attached to ‘C’ Division, Asaba. In the widely circulated footage, the officers were seen collecting money from a civilian within the station premises—an act the Command described as “embarrassing, unprofessional, and unbecoming.”
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the conduct, stressing that no citizen deserves such treatment from law enforcement personnel. He reaffirmed the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on extortion and abuse of office.
Oyeniyi aligned with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, which strictly prohibits officers from demanding or receiving money from members of the public under any guise, including the use of POS machines or other electronic payment platforms within police formations.
The Command confirmed that an orderly room trial has commenced for the officers identified as Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim. It added that the outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public upon conclusion.
The Commissioner warned that misconduct and rights violations would not be tolerated, urging officers to uphold professionalism and respect for fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
He also commended members of the public for exposing the incident and encouraged citizens to report cases of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit.
The Delta State Police Command reiterated its commitment to discipline, accountability, and restoring public trust in the force.
