
The Federal Government has released the proposed 2026 budget allocations to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), revealing a strong focus on security, infrastructure, economic management and social services.
According to the breakdown, the Ministry of Finance received the highest allocation with ₦16.78 trillion, reflecting government priorities around debt servicing, fiscal management and economic stabilisation. This is followed by the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, which was allocated ₦9.10 trillion.
Security-related agencies also featured prominently. The Ministry of Defence was allocated ₦3.15 trillion, while the Office of the National Security Adviser received ₦664.12 billion. The Ministry of Police Affairs got ₦1.33 trillion, and the Ministry of Interior was allocated ₦696.42 billion, underscoring the government’s continued emphasis on tackling insecurity across the country.
Infrastructure development remains a major priority, with the Federal Ministry of Works receiving ₦3.49 trillion, one of the largest allocations in the budget. The Ministry of Power was allocated ₦1.11 trillion, while Transport received ₦431.80 billion, and Water Resources got ₦458.65 billion.
In the social sector, the Federal Ministry of Education was allocated ₦2.40 trillion, while the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare received ₦2.15 trillion. The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation was allocated ₦462.66 billion, reflecting government efforts to address poverty and social welfare challenges.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) received ₦1.01 trillion, a figure that has already drawn attention amid preparations for future elections. Meanwhile, the Presidency and National Assembly were allocated ₦355.10 billion and ₦344.85 billion respectively, while the Judiciary received ₦341.63 billion.
Economic diversification sectors were also funded, with Agriculture and Food Security getting ₦1.45 trillion, Solid Minerals Development receiving ₦156.34 billion, and the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry allocated ₦149.18 billion. The newly prioritised Livestock Ministry was allocated ₦81.19 billion.
Other notable allocations include ₦1.35 trillion for the Ministry of Niger Delta, ₦460.74 billion for the Federal Capital Territory Administration, ₦518.36 billion for Youth Development, and ₦154.32 billion for Women Affairs.
The proposed 2026 budget is expected to be debated extensively at the National Assembly in the coming weeks, amid growing public scrutiny over rising expenditure, debt levels and the need for tangible economic impact for Nigerians.
