Fresh attacks on communities in western Niger have heightened concerns over the country’s worsening security situation, coming just days after an attempted military mutiny at a strategic base in the capital, Niamey.
Several communities in the Tillabéri region reportedly came under attack on September 2, with armed assailants targeting Darbani, Diamballa and Namarigoungou.
Local reports said the attacks left civilians dead and injured while large numbers of livestock were reportedly lost.
In Diamballa, two young girls reportedly drowned in a pond while attempting to escape the violence. Another resident was said to have sustained gunshot wounds.
A man was also reportedly killed in Namarigoungou during the assault.
The violence continued the following day, September 3, when attackers reportedly stormed Zibane in the Anzourou commune, resulting in further casualties.
The latest attacks have raised fresh questions about the capacity of Niger’s security forces to contain armed groups operating in the country’s volatile western regions while also dealing with internal military tensions.
The attacks came shortly after an attempted mutiny at Base 101 near Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey. Soldiers reportedly involved in the unrest were said to be frustrated by deteriorating security conditions and battlefield losses.
The mutiny was eventually suppressed, reportedly with assistance from Russia-linked Africa Corps personnel. Fighting around the airport and other strategic locations reportedly lasted several hours before forces loyal to the military authorities regained control.
The incident has been described as one of the most serious internal security challenges facing Niger’s military authorities since they seized power in 2023.
Tillabéri, which shares borders with Mali and Burkina Faso, has remained one of Niger’s major conflict hotspots, with jihadist groups frequently targeting rural communities, civilians and security personnel.
Beyond the immediate loss of lives, the latest attacks have also intensified the humanitarian impact of the conflict, with residents facing livestock theft, displacement, injuries and disruption to farming and other livelihoods.
Despite the renewed violence, Nigerien authorities have continued to insist that the security situation remains under control.
On September 4, the government also accused France of involvement in efforts to instigate the recent mutiny. However, authorities did not publicly provide detailed evidence to substantiate the allegation.
The combination of fresh attacks in Tillabéri and the attempted mutiny in Niamey has placed renewed focus on the security challenges confronting Niger’s military-led government as it attempts to maintain control amid persistent jihadist violence.
