The heartbreaking story of former Kenyan professional marathon runner Beatrice Murugi has sparked concern and calls for intervention after the athlete reportedly fell into severe financial hardship following the end of her sporting career.
Murugi, who once represented Kenya on the international marathon stage, reportedly used the proceeds from her athletic career to transform her family’s life. She invested in land in Nyahururu, built a home for her mother and supported her siblings’ education.
However, her fortunes reportedly changed after she invested a significant portion of her savings in a commercial lorry.
According to reports, the vehicle was later involved in a fatal road accident near Delmonte. Its insurance had reportedly expired without Murugi’s knowledge, leaving her without compensation while she faced significant medical and liability-related expenses.
In 2021, Murugi reportedly developed a severe and persistent stomach-bloating condition that affected her ability to train and carry out physically demanding work.
Her situation allegedly became even more difficult after she lost the support of her husband and was left struggling to care for her 10-year-old child while battling illness and financial difficulties.
Murugi is now reportedly living in a tiny rental room in Kerugoya, where she pays about KSh 1,000 monthly. She reportedly survives by picking tea and taking on difficult casual jobs to provide food for herself and her child.
Her story has renewed concerns about the welfare of retired athletes who dedicate their youth to representing their countries but may face serious challenges after their careers end.
Kenyans are now calling on Athletics Kenya and the Ministry of Sports to intervene, assist Murugi in accessing proper medical care and provide support that could help her rebuild her life.
Once celebrated for carrying Kenya’s hopes on the international stage, Murugi’s reported circumstances have left many asking a painful question: Who will carry her now?
